Nigerian hip-hop artist Yung6ix recently released his second single/music video of the New Year – “On A Daily 2.0” – featuring Atlanta rapper 24hrs.
Yung6ix explains, “I’m trying to give my fans a chance to know what it’s like to be 6ix on the daily and give them some creative metaphors and bars about it. Whether it’s having fun, making money, living life – we really gotta do it on the daily.”
With his distinctive sound, which he calls “TrapFro,” a blend of western hip-hop and Afrobeats, Yung6ix has been in the vanguard of Africa’s hip-hop scene since he first arrived, collaborating with megastars such Wizkid, DaVido, and Mr Eazi.
His latest and third studio album, Introduction To TrapFro, features guest appearances by Sinzu, Peruzzi, Dammy, Krane, and Erriga, and displays exactly why the contagious TrapFro sound is permeating the international hip-hop soundscape.
“On A Daily 2.0” opens slow, low, and banging, merging tasty rhythmic pulsations of fat trap with lush Afrobeats into an addictive, gleaming melody. Smooth, nasal tones riding atop swirling harmonic colors, infusing the rhymes with delectably cashmere flow.
The seductive Afrobeats imbue the melody with sonic textures reminiscent of Post Malone, tip-toeing the line between melodic singing and tight rapping, which gives the tune rippling surfaces akin to psychedelic tinctures.
24hrs’ tasty flow embellishes the verses:
“These bitches is lame, couldn’t pay me to smash, yeah / We brought in the jet, we takin’ first-class / I hop out the Wraith, I got on my mask / Balenciaga gloves in all my pictures / I’ll take you to the grave, boy, ain’t no talkin’.”
Followed by the soft-serve flow of Yung6ix.
“Fuck all the lows, I get high on a daily, on a daily (Yeah) / Ex on the phone, want me back on a daily, on a daily (Yeah) / Can’t hold me back, makin’ moves on a daily, on a daily (Yeah) / Stuck on my grind, gettin’ paid on a daily, on a daily.”
Yung6ix definitely has it going on. The amalgamation of sinewy trap with exotic Afrobeats delivers an intoxicating sound.
